The Arthuna Temple is of great historical importance and essence. The previous name of the place was “Utthunaka”. The place was the capital region of the rulers of the Paramara of Vagada and it was during the ancient times in the 11th – 12th Centuries A.D. The people of that time period and the dynasty used to worship and follow both the religion that is Jainism and the Saivism together and that is why built numerous temples of the god Shiva in that region, during that time period.
When you visit Arthuna Temple you are going to find the inscriptions of the records of the ancient times of the Paramara dynasty and the Prince Chamundaraja was the person who built the Shiva Temple in the year 1079 to honour his father. There are also other inscriptions and one of them is having the information about another temple of Shiva being built by the son of an officer and the son’s name was Anantapala.
This place is one of the main tourist spots of Banswara since this temple is not a single temple but a group of Shiva temples. There is another temple in this group and that is the Nilakantha Mahadeva Temple. The place was related to the Lakulisa sect that falls under the Saivism.
